Suzuki confirms updated SV650 for 2027

The Suzuki SV650 will receive a significant update for 2027, confirmed by a certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The update brings with it a new version of the 645cc V-twin engine that debuted in the SV-7GX earlier this year, while also marking the return of the SV650 to European markets, where the current model had been discontinued due to Euro5+ regulations.

Suzuki SV650 2027: what the certification reveals

Ride-by-wire, traction control and quick shifting are expected along with the new engine.

Reports note that the CARB filing identifies the new model with the code SV650RQM7, where M7 is understood to indicate a 2027 model year, while the RQ designation has been used for Suzuki street bikes. Since the SV650 adds to the existing certification of the SV-7GX, it will share the same engine and emissions control hardware, which should also allow Suzuki to reintroduce the model to European markets. For reference, in the SV-7GX, the 645cc V-twin produces maximum power figures of 73.4 PS and 64 Nm.

Some of the SV-7GX’s other features could make their way to the updated SV650. These include a ride-by-wire throttle, riding modes, traction control, a two-way quick shifter and a 4.2-inch TFT display. It is not yet clear whether the chassis, suspension or styling will undergo changes.

The SV650 is a fairly popular model abroad, but it was never officially sold in our market. However, we did get access to the same engine in the now discontinued V-Strom 650. It remains to be seen if the updated SV650 could change that.

For the global market, the unveiling of the 2027 model in the US suggests we could see a global unveiling later this year, perhaps at EICMA, where Suzuki debuted the SV-7GX at last year’s show.
