The 4th of July trip is expected to reach a record high despite the high cost
Clint Henderson, managing editor of The Points Guy, reports a record 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel this July 4th weekend, with many still planning trips despite high gas prices. Henderson advises drivers to leave early in the morning and use Google Flights to find affordable destinations like Japan or Canada. He also highlights airline vacation packages for potential savings.
The sun begins to rise on this beautiful July 3rd morning and Friday Screencaps is here to inspire you to get out and have a weekend the boys will be talking about 250 years from now.
Let’s start with the elephant in the room –– my HUGE golf trip to northern Michigan that spanned parts of seven days and included (my) incredible 166 holes, not a single drop of rain. There was a first for me on this trip in the weather department — a round interrupted by lightning that produced no rain over our heads.
The round ended as I stopped in the middle of the highway after a good drive. I was on my way to the yard holding my graphite shaft in mid-swing when a bolt flashed over our heads. I have never moved so quickly to a weather shelter than on Monday morning. That round ended after 15 holes, hence the odd number of holes played on tour.

The goal of not being electrocuted was achieved.
Let’s take a look at some travel details you really care about:
Trip details: 16 boys made the first part of the journey; 40 boys were in the second half.
Best course we played: Bear (Traverse City) This one is probably not close. This Jack Nicklaus course lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest golf courses in Ohio, with more 18-hole lodging than I’ve ever seen in my life. Let’s just say going out the night before playing this monster isn’t a very good idea. I made the card a full integrity 46 in the back to get the sting out of the 9 in the front.

Believe it or not, I’ve played at some great resorts in Michigan, and the Grand Traverse might be the best. The beer shack behind the 18th green was top notch. The carriages were of a high standard. The soft music coming from the 40 or 50 speakers hidden around the clubhouse was at a perfect level.
Best party spot: (tie) Shanty Creek Resort (Bellaire, MI – home of Short’s Brewery) and Garland Golf Resort I know, I know…have a backbone and pick one, right? Men, you can’t go wrong here either. The Shanty has a ski village setting with restaurants and bars that cater to bachelorette parties, wedding parties and golfers alike. So, the party.
Money is flying around. Everyone is in good shape. The young boys rubbed shoulders with the hero of the golfers at the weekend. Summer camp for adults.
AMERICA’S FAVORITE BEER – AND THE JOBS TIED TO IT – STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF TRADING LIFE
Then there’s Garland, which is like going to a party in your cabin in the middle of the woods in the middle of Michigan where cell phone reception can be a legitimate problem. The tiki hut bar in Garland is sneaky. He sneaks around a lot. If you end up on that patio with the right crew, you’re in for a few nights you won’t soon forget. Dave Sanderson, who runs the site, is a Georgia native, Auburn fan, and OutKick reader. If you are looking for a resort run by a guy he finds usDave the man. You are one of us.
The best golf course food we ate: Garland hanger steak. Game over. I’m actually surprised the chef didn’t run out of hanger steak based on how much our group bought over three nights. The runner-up would be Garland’s shrimp. On Tuesday night, I saw Millennial Chris B. at Bowling Green without licking his plate clean of the sauce they poured over the shrimp.
At the Shanty, you order a steak meal from the hotel bar. You will not be disappointed.
The best sandwich we eat: Get a white pepper sandwich at Short’s in Bellaire. Turkey avocado with roasted red peppers and an aioli to die for. We had a sandwich two days straight.
How did I play? Did I shoot in the 80s? No, but I shot a 95 at The Legend, the Arnold Palmer course up there that kicked my ass in the fall. Given the complexity of the vegetable, that feels like a huge accomplishment. Give me about 3-4 more times playing these courses and I will know where I put my misses.
My biggest issue is always around vegetables. I need to set up a lot better, especially when I’m playing a green that’s 50 yards wide and I’m leaving myself to 40 feet for pars. I had my fair share of pars, but I also had some absolutely soul-crushing three putts.
Bonus weather information: Friday morning, it was in the low-to-mid-50s and we were wearing pants. Tuesday afternoon, the heat index in Garland was hovering around 105 and we were playing in a swamp that had received seven inches of rain in the previous week. Yes, the bugs got bad.
Prices: At Shanty, we paid $430 for two nights at their hotel (nice rooms, which really shocked me because the resort is getting old) and four rounds of weekend golf. I think Garland was $530 for three nights, four rounds and a round at The Sawyer, a 10-hole reversible course where you take out three clubs and go barefoot, if you’re one of us. Sawyer was explosive. I know some of the guys on our team weren’t happy about hitting the mat, but once we’re out, it’s not an issue anymore. The course is nice, green, spongy and the kind of course where you soak in Pure Michigan.
If there is one thing I would change, it would be that Sawyer needs a pop-up bar on the course and maybe a beer cart girl with a cooler in one of the holes. Dave said he’s on top of the plan. I trust the boy.
Are there any surprises on the trip? No one was arrested or required medical attention. That’s a tough ride. But there will be some surprise content from me for you to see next week. Garland has a Facebook content series “Tee Shot Tuesday” that he asked me to appear on as a guest golfer. I had played about 158 holes of golf when we shot “Tee Shot Tuesday,” so keep that in mind when I post the video next week.
Added bonus: Mrs. Screencaps called to let me know that our hot water tank started leaking on Saturday and had to be replaced. Needless to say, that wasn’t cheap.
Conclusion: I was telling someone before this trip that Up North is now my Vegas. In my 20s and 30s, I needed the Vegas action to get a dopamine rush. Those days are over. Now I want to drive in the woods, listen to music, drink beers with friends and hit the golf ball a few hundred times.
At this point in life, I am very lucky to find guys who share the same feelings about what this journey means to the soul. It’s that brief moment in life where you can relax before heading back down I-75 to the real world. It’s like when we all used to get back on that plane home after a weekend in Vegas.
You go home with great memories, stories to tell for years, and the determination to do it all over again next year.

Reminder: Jena’s husband has five major championships. Let’s just say Jena wouldn’t shoot below 200 Up North, but she’ll love the Garland tiki hut bar scene.
Perhaps it’s by design that Brooks doesn’t pressure Jena to become a better golfer. Guys, if he’s a good golfer, he’ll want you on your golf clubs.
That brings me to a new trend I heard about on this golf trip –– Women who just want to hit the golf course while their husbands/boyfriends play. Is this a big problem where you live? Courses here are starting to not allow riders due to the lack of carriages because many women want to ride.
Guys, please, let us go and act like villains for 4 1/2 hours alone.

Do you set the thermostat to 78 when it comes out to 95? You seem crazy, don’t you? I was talking to my friend Diesel on the way home from golf and he had planned his to be 76 because his electric company was charging double the electric rates due to the high temperatures.
Are these electric companies preparing us for the future when THEY choose what temperature is right for your house? Remember, we now have these smart meters. Some of you have smart thermostats connected to electric companies.
I have a very, very bad feeling when this all happened.

And with that, we’re going straight into the most important 4th of July I’ll ever live to see. The weather may be a big problem this weekend, but we will soldier on to celebrate the freedom we all enjoy (minus the double energy bill).

As I have said many, many times here, never lose sight of how lucky we are to call this place home as we live among people who absolutely hate this country. We must never allow them to become the norm. This country continues to be the greatest temptation in the history of the world because of all of you who believe in what those founders wrote 250 years ago.
Let’s have an incredible weekend. I will be back in the morning to add an opinion.
