A Virginia mountaintop was scarred by coal mining; now features a 200,000-square-foot high school that brings together students from four schools on one campus

A flat plateau once damaged by mountaintop coal mining has been given a new purpose as the site of a consolidated high school designed to become an educational center for central Appalachia. The newly built 200,000-square-foot Southern Gap High School was officially dedicated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Buchanan County, Virginia, according to a report from the Virginia Mountaineer. The £60 million facility replaces four older local schools and brings together students from across the county to a central campus built on a reclaimed hill. Designed by VMDO Architects, the campus sits on land once used for heavy industrial activities. The project aims to respond to changes in the rural population and aging school buildings by pooling resources into a modern facility.

Transforming an extracted landscape

Buchanan County has long relied on coal mining, and mountaintop removal changed the area’s landscape for several decades. According to project documents from VMDO Architects, the new school aims to convert a former industrial site into a public space connected to the region’s identity. The building’s design reflects the county’s coal mining past. A long central brick corridor runs through the school and is designed to resemble the shafts of an underground coal mine. Metal-clad wings branch off from the main corridor and take design cues from the area’s industrial history. The campus brings together academic and practical subjects under one roof. It includes engineering laboratories, large welding areas, college preparation classrooms, a performing arts auditorium, and combined sports facilities. Large windows along the main hallways offer expansive views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains.

Consolidating four rural campuses

The project brings together four former school communities into one school. Local leaders hope the shared campus will help reduce long-standing disparities in resources and access across the rural county. By bringing together students from different parts of Buchanan County, Buchanan County Public Schools aims to provide all students with equal access to Advanced Placement courses, technical training programs, and modern athletic facilities, regardless of where they live. During the groundbreaking ceremony, as reported by the Virginia Mountaineer, district officials described the project as an important long-term investment in local youth. Principal Mark Cooper called the opening an important moment for the county and said the school could become a central gathering place for a community that moves beyond its industrial past. Superintendent Sherry Fletcher shared a similar sentiment, describing the completed school as the result of a decade-long district plan to improve educational opportunities in rural Virginia.

Infrastructure designed for regional retention

Rural school districts across the United States continue to face issues related to declining student numbers and the transfer of people seeking employment. Local officials hope Southern Gap High School can also support economic development in southwest Virginia. The campus is located near the Coalfields Expressway, which is still under construction, and is part of a larger plan for the 2,000-acre Southern Gap Plateau. The wider development is expected to include cultural attractions and commercial facilities. By combining vocational training and college preparatory education, Southern Gap allows students to work toward business certifications while earning credits that can assist with college admission. District leaders hope that access to modern education and training close to home will encourage younger residents to stay in the area and develop their careers locally. The school opened three days earlier than originally planned for the 2026 academic year, after several years of construction work overseen by Skanska and Buchanan County Public Schools project managers. Classes for the newly combined student body are already underway.
