Why is Sheamus reportedly leaving WWE?
The star player, whose real name is Stephen Farrelly, is reportedly not satisfied with his proposed contract extension. Instead, he has decided to move on.
Fightful Select reported that WWE approached Sheamus about a restructured, reduced contract while he was recovering from December shoulder surgery, and he quickly turned it down, choosing to let his contract expire rather than terminate him. The Wrestling Observer described the situation as almost identical to the exit of The New Day earlier this year, which is part of a wider wave of veteran departures that also saw Brock Lesnar exit after WrestleMania 42. WWE’s pivot towards young stars like Oba Femi has left little room for veterans at the top of the card.
What Signs Sheamus Made in WWE?
Although WWE has yet to confirm the news, Sheamus’ profile changes and subsequent inclusions have confirmed his exit.
On July 2, Sheamus removed the WWE name from his public profiles, switched to his real name “S. Farrelly,” and changed his profile to “Pro Wrestler.” Fans then noticed that WWE had quietly moved him to their alumni page. Neither move is an official announcement, which is why the story remains in the realm of being reported rather than confirmed.
What did Sheamus accomplish in the WWE?
Samus won almost every title there was to win and his career will undoubtedly earn him a place in the WWE Hall of Fame.
His resume backs that up: WWE’s first shock victory over John Cena at TLC 2009, four world championships, three United States titles, and five tag team reigns, most notably The Bar with Cesaro.
He is also one of only two Superstars to have won the Royal Rumble, King of the Ring, and Money in the Bank, a sweep that underscores his versatility. The only drink missing is the Intercontinental Title he was recently campaigning for, a belt that would have made him a Grand Slam champion.
What’s next for Sheamus?
There is speculation that Sheamus could stay with AEW. Some have even wondered if he might sign with TNA. In any case, the signing of Sheamus will be big news in the industry if it happens.
