When looking at hybrids and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), we focus on the fluidity of the technology. The best hybrids offer good levels of efficiency while hiding the complexity of their propulsion systems with a seamless transition between the electric motor and the engine.
This is what we evaluate:
1. Real-world efficiency and reach
For PHEVs, we test their electric-only ranges against official WLTP claims to see how many miles they actually cover. For self-charging hybrids, we measure MPG on a variety of routes (urban, stop-and-go, country roads and highways) to ensure they deliver true fuel savings compared to a standard gasoline car.
2. Powertrain refinement
We evaluate the transition between electric and internal combustion energy. We look for systems that switch imperceptibly, avoiding the “rubber band effect”. We also test performance under full load to ensure the car doesn’t feel underpowered once the battery runs out.
3. Practicality and packaging.
Adding batteries and motors often consumes trunk space or fuel tank capacity. We measure the real-world impact on luggage space and passenger comfort. We also tested the ease of use of the PHEVs’ charging ports and the effectiveness of the regenerative braking systems in daily traffic.
4. Driving and handling
Hybrids are heavier than their gasoline counterparts. We test each car on challenging B-roads to see how they handle their extra weight. We are looking for a balance: a car that stays composed in the corners without a wooden support that crashes into the bumps.
