Championship roundup: Nuno admits West Ham ‘let down’ fans with Charlton defeat | Championship

Charlton maintained their perfect start to the Championship season with a 2-1 victory at West Ham in a pulsating London derby to pile more pressure on the Hammers manager, Nuno Espírito Santo.

Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell put Charlton 2-0 ahead before Joel Piroe, signed on loan from Leeds, marked his first appearance for the home side with a goal that set up a frantic finish. Taty Castellanos then missed a stoppage-time penalty for West Ham that would have salvaged a point.

West Ham have not won their past 10 derbies, losing nine of them, but Hammers head coach Nuno defended the decision for Castellanos to take the spot-kick instead of Jarrod Bowen.

He said: “We trust Taty to take the penalties. I don’t know [if he will take the next one], we will have to decide. We started badly again. We got punished from a situation where we know Charlton create problems. It became much harder but we still created a lot of situations but were not accurate enough in the boxes. Football is this – to be accurate in the offensive box and we have to defend much better.

“We had a lot of possession and tried to break them, which is not easy. We should have finished better. Of course, I feel under pressure. West Ham is pressure every day – it is a big club. You see that with 62,000 fans in the stands and we let them down. This is the more disappointing feeling. The boys tried until the end. We are going to repeat, repeat and repeat in training, in the final third, to create situations that allow us to score. We will keep the belief and the process.”

Fer López bagged a double as Wolves secured their first victory of the season with a convincing 3-1 success over Preston at Deepdale. The Spaniard put Wanderers ahead with an eighth-minute rocket and substitute Adam Armstrong tucked home a 71st-minute second, just four minutes after stepping on to the pitch.

López put a cherry on top of the cake with a poacher’s finish in the 82nd minute as César Peixoto’s men flexed their muscles, but substitute Jordan Thompson bagged a 25-yard consolation in the first minute of stoppage time to give the home faithful something to cheer.

It was a much-needed victory for the relegated Premier League side but Preston are now without a win in their opening two Championship matches.

Blackburn stunned Middlesbrough with two goals in the space of six second-half minutes to earn a 2-1 victory at Ewood Park which continues their impressive start to the season. After conceding late against Wolves, the early signs pointed to more misery for Rovers as Kim Hellberg’s side smothered them early and were rewarded through Jeremy Sarmiento’s composed 12th-minute finish.

Rovers created enough in that first half to give their fans encouragement and pounced after the break through Andri Gudjohnsen’s 49th-minute header – his second goal in as many games – and Todd Cantwell’s diving header six minutes later to complete the turnaround.

Here, he was the hero as Saints dug deep to preserve an unbeaten home run which stretches back to January. Ryan Manning also scored a stoppage-time penalty after Svante Ingelsson was sent off for bringing down Samuel Edozie.

Cyle Larin bagged his third goal in as many games to give Tonda Eckert’s side an early lead but Stoke hit back through Ethan Galbraith and looked good value for a point until late on.

Wrexham were kept waiting for their first Championship win of the season as they drew 1-1 with Watford in front of Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Both goals at the Racecourse Ground came in the opening quarter with Luca Kjerrumgaard’s header cancelled out by Danny Imray’s first Wrexham goal. It meant another draw for Wrexham after the Red Dragons were denied by a last-gasp Cardiff equaliser on Monday.

Cardiff remain unbeaten two games into their return to the second tier after goals by Cian Ashford and Yousef Salech earned a 2-2 draw at Derby.

The Bluebirds were good value for their point, having twice taken the lead in front of a raucous Pride Park crowd of 28,926. But the Rams, unconvincing for large periods, capitalised on defensive mishaps to earn their first point of the new campaign through Carlton Morris and Bobby Clark.

Taïryk Arconte scored his first two goals for Millwall as they breezed past 10-man Norwich 3-0 to make it two wins from two this season. Having been tipped to challenge for the playoffs, Norwich have lost both of their opening games and had defender José Córdoba sent off in the second half at The Den.

Córdoba was sent off for a second yellow card after bundling over Arconte as he charged towards the area.

Victory was sealed with six minutes remaining when a slick counterattack ended with Luke Cundle sliding in Millwall’s third.

Alex Neil, the Millwall manager, said: “I thought it was a complete performance from us, probably the most complete performance we’ve had in the nearly 20 months I’ve been here.”

Portsmouth claimed their first win of the season with a comprehensive 3-1 success at Lincoln. Portsmouth found themselves under the cosh early on but a seventh-minute goal from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen put them in the driving seat.

Adrian Segecic doubled the lead nine minutes later before Reeco Hackett-Fairchild pulled one back from the spot just past the half-hour mark. Substitute Ebrima Adams made the game safe with a superb strike after 69 minutes to leave Lincoln still searching for their first win back in the second tier for more than 60 years.

Demarai Gray rescued a point for Birmingham with a late penalty in a 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City. Scott Twine’s 33rd-minute effort gave the visitors the advantage before they conceded a 42nd-minute equaliser to Carlos Vicente. Dom Ballard converted Rio Cardines’ cross with a superb flick with his back to goal after 85 minutes to restore Bristol City’s lead but they could not hold on.

QPR’s Richard Kone missed several chances in a goalless draw with Bolton at Loftus Road. Kone, left out for last weekend’s win at Portsmouth, was restored to the Rangers side but missed four clear-cut opportunities during a first half largely dominated by the hosts.

Callum O’Hare came closest to netting a winner but Sheffield United had to be content with a goalless draw at Swansea City.

West Brom have said they are “devastated” after the death of former midfielder Quevin Castro, aged 25.

Castro, who made two senior appearances for the Baggies during a two-year spell at the Hawthorns, collapsed during a friendly between his current club, third-tier Portuguese side Real Sport Clube, and Estrela da Amadora on Saturday and later died in hospital.

West Brom said: “West Brom are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of Quevin Castro, aged just 25. Albion will pay tribute to Quevin on Sunday, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the fixture against Burnley. James Morrison’s men will also wear black armbands.”
