Today (August 22) is the 387th anniversary of the establishment of Madras (now Chennai): Madras Day 2026. It was a historic settlement and today it has become the center of culture and cinema.
Chennai is not just a backdrop for Tamil cinema. He has been a character. Films have recorded his many moods, from the streets of North Chennai to the urban neighbourhoods. Here are five Tamil films that explored the different nuances of Madras and Chennai.
‘Madras’: the politics and identity of North Chennai
Pa. Ranjith’s ‘Madras’ (2014) was a brave portrait of life in North Chennai. The film used a controversial wall to examine politics, power, friendship and local identity. His characters expressed the desires and struggles of people who lived in a close-knit community. The streets and houses were shown with a natural and inhabited air. ‘Madras’, starring Karthi and Kalaiyarasan, remains one of Tamil cinema’s most memorable portraits of the city.
The gritty world of North Chennai
Vetri Maaran’s ‘Vada Chennai’, starring Dhanush in the lead role, explored the city through the lives of its working-class communities. Venkat Prabhu’s ‘Chennai 600028’ (2007) showed a completely different side of the city. The film followed a group of friends whose lives revolved around cricket, friendship and everyday fun. ‘Madrasapatinam’ explored Chennai through a historical lens, taking audiences to the city during the pre-independence era. Set in the 1940s, the film had a love story to showcase old Madras, its streets, its culture and its changing social landscape. ‘Angadi Theru’, however, looked at the lives of young workers on the busy commercial streets of Chennai. The film portrayed poverty, exploitation, dreams and the pressure of life in the city.
