Mastering Passion for CEOs: How Your Why Changes Everything

Mastering Passion for CEOs is about identifying your strengthsunderstanding your purpose and clearly defining your why. By harnessing deep self-knowledge, you can show up each day ready to make the greatest contribution in all areas of your life. Without this anchor, even the most successful CEOs can find themselves empty and directionless. Purpose-driven motivation also sustains CEOs through the inevitable challenges that come with leadership, ensuring sustainable, long-lasting careers that don’t burn out.

Why success is not enough

I once coached a founding CEO who had recently sold his business for hundreds of millions of dollars and had successfully exited the business. He had achieved his goal of financial freedom at the age of 55. However, he said he had never been so depressed in his entire life. I asked him, “What would make you jump out of bed in the morning with the same passion and energy you had before selling your business?”

He didn’t need much time to think of an answer. He decided that if he let his non-compete run out and started a new business in the same industry, he could regain his passion and energy and build something even bigger. That’s exactly what he did and lived his dream again.

How to Unlock Passion Mastery for CEOs

If you live your life with passion, you will be unstoppable in all aspects of your life. But without passion, even the finish line seems empty. I often work with CEOs who come to me feeling lost or burned. To get them back on track, I start by asking three simple questions:

  1. What does success look like?
  2. What do you really want?
  3. What is your purpose?

These three questions are a daily practice, a habit that anchors you in your purpose throughout the day. Asking them regularly helps you stay positive and inspired in your brain. Instead of starting your day thinking about problems, start by thinking about what inspires you and why you are here; In short, the reason you jump out of bed that morning.

The questions are just a starting point. He wants to instill CEO passion mastery in their daily lives. One way to do this is to keep a passion journal. For two or three weeks, keep track of the activities you like and those you don’t. Rate each on a scale of 1 to 5. Delegate, outsource, or stop doing everything that you rate 1 to 3. This intentional focus on your areas of strength is key to maximizing your passion on a daily basis. A minimum of 80% of your time should be spent on your areas of strength; everything else must be delegated or outsourced.

Live your purpose every day

Mastering Passion for CEOs allows you to live a life where you spend most of your time doing activities you love, contributing meaningfully, and showing up at your best and inspired. If you have passion, you will find a way to develop the competence you need to succeed. If you don’t have passion, you’ll probably give up when things get tough. The formula is simple: passion + competence + need = extraordinary results.
