Body: The rubber on the door seal can remove paint from the interior. You can purchase a paint protection film for closed doors to prevent the problem from happening again. Also check for clouding in the rearview mirrors. New glass costs around £20.
Ceiling: Make sure it runs smoothly and quickly. They don’t usually fail, but if they do, repair bills could run into the thousands. The optional wind deflector is a must, but is easily available online.
Water leaks: Again, it’s not a common problem, but if the roof doesn’t seal properly and doesn’t let in water, there’s a chance of running up high bills.
Inside: Don’t be surprised if the dash panel makes noise, especially on cars with higher mileage.

Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto were added as an option in 2018 (look for widescreen navigation), but can be upgraded on earlier models.
Options drive up the price of used examples. The Harman Kardon sound system and leather seats stand out especially.
Trim designations weren’t added until 2018, and even then the Classic, Exclusive, and Sport packages could still be loaded with options.
Power is down a bit in 2021 for the Cooper S (to 176 HP), but you’d be hard pressed to tell.
Insurance is reasonable, with groups ranging from 11 to 33 people.
how much to spend
£3000-£6999: High mileage cars (mostly well used). Lower spec Coopers and Cooper Ds with less than 100,000 miles too.
£7000-£9999: The first cars, with the Cooper S and JCW available at a four-figure premium.
£10,000-£14,999: Desirable facelifted 2018 cars with Union Flag taillights.
