66.5 million years ago, a T. rex crossed North America; Fossil footprints now show giant dinosaur walked, not ran

For decades, paleontologists have studied Tyrannosaurus rex (T. rex) through bones, teeth, and isolated footprints. Those fossils reveal what the animal looked like, how big it was, and what it may have eaten, but they rarely show the creature in motion. That changed with the discovery of a short trail in southwestern North Dakota. Four enormous three-toed footprints, pressed into the mud about 66.5 million years ago, form the first known footprint attributed to an adult T. rex. The spacing between the tracks suggests the animal was moving about 3.5 to 4.5 miles per hour, a pace comparable to a brisk human walk. Like modern predators, it probably spent much of its time walking, resting and conserving energy. A relaxed pace may have been much more common than a high-speed chase.This doesn’t make the animal any less impressive. A seven-tonne predator moving at the speed of a human pace would still have been an overwhelming presence. His stride covered about 13 feet, and each foot left an impression of three feet on the ground. Even during a walk, its scale would have been difficult for any smaller animal to ignore.The clue allows scientists and the public to imagine T. Rex as an animal with a daily routine, not simply a symbol of prehistoric violence.A new window to dinosaur movementThe discovery may also help researchers compare T. rex to other large theropods. By studying stride length, foot placement, and gait, scientists can test biomechanical models developed from skeletons and computer simulations.If observed walking speed matches predictions based on anatomy, confidence in those models is strengthened. If it differs, researchers may need to reconsider assumptions about leg posture, muscle strength, or body balance.Digital scans can preserve footprints in three dimensions, allowing scientists to examine details that might be missed by observing the surface. Researchers can study the depth of each footprint, the angle of the toes, and how sediment flowed around the foot. These details can reveal whether the ground was soft, firm, wet or uneven.The site can also be compared to other Hell Creek Formation trails. Together, these records can show how dinosaurs moved through different parts of the landscape and whether individuals traveled alone or in groups.Why a short route is importantIt only took four footprints to change what scientists know about the behavior of adult T. rex. The tour is short, but the information it contains is unusually rich. It establishes that an adult animal walked across the landscape, provides a reasonable speed estimate, and confirms that direct evidence of movement can survive even when no skeleton is nearby.The discovery also illustrates how incomplete the fossil record remains. Paleontologists have found many T. rex bones, including partial and nearly complete skeletons, but a living animal leaves more than bones. Footprints, bite marks, nests, and coprolites add behavioral evidence.Each new trace can challenge assumptions. A dinosaur imagined as a fast runner can be found walking. A species that is supposed to travel alone may leave footprints alongside others.
