Southampton are eyeing a move for Justin Devenny after a review of Shea Charles’ future
Southampton are looking to make a move for Crystal Palace’s Justin Devenny, who are keen to strengthen their midfield this summer.
The Saints could be forced into the market for a new midfielder, with Shea Charles’ future in doubt, amid interest from Leeds United, and the Premier League side have now submitted a bid.
However, the Whites are yet to match the demands of the Championship side, which could open the door to a carjacking, as Everton have recently stormed into the race.

Honesty |
Should Charles leave, the Saints will need to sign a new midfielder this summer. The Northern Irishman was a key player last season, with three goals and two assists in 31 appearances in the competition. |
|
Finance |
It is unclear what kind of money Palace hope to get for Devenny, but he only has one year left on his contract, weakening their negotiating position. With Southampton holding £30m for Charles though, Tonda Eckert should have enough money to strengthen the squad. |
|
Understanding |
Oliver Glasner was full of praise for the 22-year-old, saying: “He is an unbelievable footballer, very professional. He understands the game, finds space, and can score goals.” However, he is yet to make a real name for himself at the Eagles, having played just 789 minutes in the Premier League last season. |

Impact |
Should Southampton get a deal over the line, they may be able to pay Charles to leave. Devenny is also capable of playing midfield and attacking midfield, meaning he could challenge for Finn Azaz’s starting spot. |
Southampton are targeting Justin Devenny
According to journalist Alan Nixon (via SaintsExtra), Southampton are now keen on signing the Crystal Palace midfielder, who is seen as a potential replacement for Charles.
However, Preston North End are also in the running for the 14-game Northern Ireland international, meaning there could be competition for his signature.
Justin Devenny could be a strong successor to Shea Charles
Southampton moved their Northern Irish midfielder out of a deeper midfield role during most of his time at St.
Last season, the Scottish midfielder averaged 2.9 tackles per 90 in the Premier League, which was the second highest in the club, and Charles averaged 2.1 in the Championship.
In fact, the average defensive contribution of 8.2 in 90 is the highest of any member of the Southampton team, apart from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who averaged 9.9.
Devenny hasn’t been able to establish himself as a regular starter for Palace, meaning a move to the Championship would make a lot of sense, and his defensive qualities mean he could be a solid midfielder for Eckert.
