The otherworldly geology of the Vásquez rocks

Several of the outcrops at the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Southern California jut out of the arid landscape of the Soledad Basin at notable angles. Geologists estimate that the tilt of the sedimentary rock strata found in the area averages 50 degrees, steep enough that many of the otherworldly formations appear to point toward the stars.

This is appropriate, in a way, because rocks have served as one of the trip to the stars Franchise favorite set pieces from the show’s inaugural season, when Captain James T. Kirk scrambled across the jagged terrain during an iconic battle with a member of a reptilian alien species.

The Vasquez Rocks did not start out pointing skyward. When they were forming 25 million years ago, the sediments spread in alluvial fans: cone-shaped deposits that develop as fast-moving streams that flow onto relatively flat plains. The sediment likely had not traveled very far, and much of it had eroded from nearby highlands. Over time, the alluvial fan deposits were buried and cemented into thick layers of sandstone and conglomerate rock.

Over millions of years, the region was reshaped by the interaction of tectonic plates just to the east. Two plates rub against each other along a boundary that includes the San Andreas Fault, a strike-slip fault where the North American plate moves to the southeast and the Pacific plate moves to the northwest, contributing to powerful tectonic forces that spread throughout the region.

Over time, this tectonic activity caused the uplift and deformation of the Soledad Basin, with sedimentary layers gradually tilting, folding, and rotating. Once exposed at the surface, millions more years of erosion and weathering further sculpted the formations, removing the softer material and leaving the tougher sandstone and conglomerate fins and ridges that amaze visitors today.
